I now have an implementation of this in CVS in the toby-metatypes-branch. I propose this goes into zope 2.6. Any comments? (Ive CCed everyone who has commented on the proposal; I hope thats OK)

The problem is that pretty much every other editor out there doesn't know a whit about the types of objects/methods they are creating. Does emacs really know the difference between a python method, dtml-method, dtml-document, and a page template? Not likely. This touches on a larger issue of using ZODB as an object file system, with all the messiness and painful history that concept has had (BeOS, OS/2 HPFS, Mac's data/resource forks, MS's upcoming OFS stuff immediately come to mind). So far, the best folks have been able to come up with has been to use filenname extensions, and you know how many folks are really happy with that idea ... :| -Charles

This worked extremely well, and the site is almost faster than the squid cache now. :-) http://www.forskning.no is a major ZOPE site (for us), that will be released tomorrow noon local time. This is the first site that uses our soon to be opensourced TopicMap engine that builds on CMF. The engine lets CMF handle all Topic Map data items, giving us access to CMF functionality like versioning and workflow. Python 2.1.3 is out. See http://www.python.org/2.1.3/ This release _should_ now make Zope happy - it has the recent bugfix for the GC/Trashcan interaction ugliness. I'd recommend anyone running Zope 2.4 or 2.5 to upgrade to this version, in particular if you use PythonScripts. Anthony

Call Profiler strangeness - lots of ZODB transactions

I'm investigating why our product ZODB is growing when it shouldn't. I've found that the undo log has entries in it every five minutes saying "Installed product CallProfiler by Zope". More infrequently (not regularly) we also have "Installed product ZOracleDA by Zope". The Call Profiler was designed specifically not to hit the ZODB - it's in-memory only with. Our setup consists of seven ZEO clients talking to the one ZEO server - the one that's getting all these hits in the ZODB. Does anyone else see this happening? Anyone have any ideas why we're seeing this behaviour? Richard

IMHO, much of what makes the ZMI difficult to use is due to limitations of the textarea widget in a web browser (no syntax highlighting, no indentation support, etc.) So what if there was a way to get JavaScript to take the contents of a textarea widget, save that to a temporary file and then call a local editor of the user's choice to edit that file. Upon exit of the local editor, the contents of the file are then put back in the textarea widget. How would the use model work? Hook into the right mouse button menu over the textarea widget an entry called "Edit Contents with Local Editor". Granted there a lots of issues here, chief among them figuring out how to let JavaScript write data to the client machine (read security). All the same, this could let folks have the best of both worlds: ZMI for navigation, user's local editor for editing. Just a thought. -Charles

Hi, I'm looking for an framework-like product which allows the integrate an independent WYSIWYG-editor like richtext 0.2 from sourceforge into zope, or a java based editor. probably as a ZMI-Editor for document content, or as a generell front-end editor of documents for end-users. This framework should not depend on a special WYSIWYG-editor, so if the WYSIWYG-editor or the base technology changes the framework-api will be the same against zope. I knew IEMethod, SmartText from SmartSections. Any WYSIWYG-editor product for zope forgotten ? Please tell me. A short mail with the URL will help. Regards, Dirk

Are there Graphic Designers?

Hello everyone, as we are moving forward developing Zope 3 with large steps, it becomes more and more desirable to think about a nice frontend (ZMI) for Zope 3. However the skill set of the developers currently working on Zope 3 does not include good graphics design skills. For this reason the development team is looking for one to two good graphic artists who would like to work on the look and feel of the new Zope version. Since it is fully developed from scratch, there are almost no restrictions, other than: It has to be functional. Are there any takers?
