[Collector] Strange reject policy

I got a reject message for "http://collector.zope.org/Zope/444" with the comment: ZClasses are not being actively maintained, so unless you provide a patch, it is not likely to be fixed. I see this as a strange reject policy. In my view, bug reports in the collector should only be rejected when they are not bugs or when they can not longer occur. We want that people with strange effects look into the collector to find out whether this is a known problem, don't we? Rejected bug reports are much more difficult to find than open ones. In this case, the issue reports a true bug which pose a potential security risk because a permission mapping unexpectedly has no effect. I do not argue that this bug needs a fix but the report should at least be easily found. -- Dieter

The bleak Future of Zope?!

Hello, Maik Jablonski of the german speaking Zope Users Group DZUG issued a pretty bleak outlook for the future of Zope. What are your oppinions? Here comes the translation of his oppoion: > Maik, what makes you look full of scepticism for > the future of Zope? Shortly said, the whole set of stupidities in connection with Zope3. It is a pretty bad state for a project, if it looms for years as the followup project on the horizon but in reality isn't one! I can't believe the fairy tales with the possible migration from Zope2 to Zope3. All the people which have dwelled more or less deeply into the Zope2 world, thereby having had an enormous learning curve and now running applications, will not be able to participate easily on the academic Zope3 train. The technic freaks who modell Zope3 are usually not application developers, which have to build and run working applications for real human users. The artifical not-yet-product Zope3 will sooner or later be distracting development efforts from Zope2 because Zope3 is "almost finished." That doesn't look not nice ... Further I see the problem that Zope probably has no real target group as an application server. The enterprise world is dominated by .Net and J2EE. Zope in its current form without a sensible documentation in conjunction with the drama about the english zope book doesn't help changing this. Scripting has arrived in the Java world by Groovy, so this isn't a reason for using Zope anymore. In the world of small and medium applications PHP is likely to stay, because it leads much faster to results. Zope is to complicated for this. For the CMS stuff we have Plone, but this is rather suited for handling some simplistic documents for the intranet rather then a nice internet representation. This is because customizing Plone isn't trivial at all and nobody want's to run web pages with standard underwear blue. OK, the colours can be changed easily, other features via CSS, etc. ... Maybe I'm simply sick of moving along within web browsers and the file system without a sensible IDE and documentation. Regards, Maik

XML-RPC incorrect 404 return code

Hi, I'm doing some stuff using Zope as an XML-RPC server, and have come across a rather interesting bug. If the method doesn't exist on the Zope server, Zope returns an xmlrpclib.Fault with a faultCode= -1. This completely trips out my XML-RPC client which was rather expecting an xmlrpclib.ProtocolError. Does anybody have a strong opinion on sorting out ZPublisher.xmlrpc.py to to do a little more than it's present rather lame error handling?? Alan

Change in repository approach to software sharing

The Zope project includes a number of interrelated subprojects, such as: - Zope 2 - Zope 3 - ZODB - ZConfig Software from the ZODB and ZConfig projects are shared by Zope 2 and Zope 3. We want this sharing to be very convenient for people working on Zope 2 and Zope 3. We don't want users of the Zope 2 and Zope 3 repository to have to do separate checkouts for ZODB and ZConfig. CVS supports such software sharing through it's "module" system. The module system has some flaws, so we use symbolic links instead. In a response to: http://dev.zope.org/Zope3/MovingSCMToSubversion John Belmonte has suggested that Zope 2 and Zope 3 should depend on specific versions of shared packages, rather than on the head. I'm inclined to agree. People working on ZODB and ZConfig have to test their changes against both Zope 2 and Zope 3 to avoid breakage. This is very burdensome and causes much pain when they get it wrong. Fortunately, subversion provides a mechanism for sharing specific revisions. We'll be able to have the convenience of getting ZODB and ZConfig (and other shared software) when we do a checkout *and* we'll be able to control what parts we get. To see how this will work, we'll look at ZConfig as an example (because it has a single package) of reusable software that we will include in Zope 3. In the repository, we'll have a top-level Zope3 project directory, with the standard svn subdirectories "trunk", "branches", and "tags". We'll also have a top-level ZConfig project directory. The "trunk" of the ZConfig Python package will be in ZConfig/trunk/src/ZConfig. If we create a tag T1 of ZConfig, then the Python package for that tag will be in ZConfig/tags/T1/src/ZConfig. Now, when we set up the Zope 3 repository, we will create the ZConfig package in Zope 3 by copying a *tag* from the ZConfig project: svn copy svn+ssh://svn.zope.org/repos/ZConfig/tags/T1/src/ZConfig \ svn+ssh://svn.zope.org/repos/Zope3/trunk/src/ZConfig -m 'Bring ZConfig T1 into main branch' Then, whenever someone checks out the Z3 trunk, they'll get the ZConfig from T1. If we need to, we can even make Zope3-local changes to ZConfig. Later, we may decide to upgrade the Zope 3 head to use ZConfig tag 3. At that point, we can recopy from the tag, or we can merge changes made between the two tags. Zope and ESI

Hi all, Has anybody used ESI with zope ? I know that ESI support was added to squid and the project was funded by Zope corporation. But I could not find much information on the project after that. We are planing to experiment with ESI for one of our projects and if required implement a framework for zope (we will make it available to everyone if we implement it), which is similar to JESI, since manually embedding the tags could be a pain and moreover things like aquistion must be handled automatically by the framework. I would like to hear others experiences with ESI with zope. Also how the ESI tags were used and what were the performance benefits. hi a call a method with this path: /poll/question/answer/testMethod in my "poll" class i defined a method which returns "self.getId()" but it shows me always my "poll" ID not the expected "answer" id.... i would like to access the id's like context.getId() does when working in the ZMI (i am new to products) tnx HakTom

Well, I suspect the interest in this type of tool might be big enough to allow for the open Source model to apply in an efficient manner ? Depends on the skills required to bring it to life. I've started using Eclipse lately, and I just love it, I've combined PyDT/PyDEV + Subclipse + XMLBuddy and I have a decent tool for working on my products and skins. At home, I have a similar setup for working with Python/C, and it's fantastic, I'm far more productive with it. Some people might take offense to using a Java tool to do the job, but it seems to me like a potentially excellent foundation. Apparently Jython can be integrated into it ... I've been meaning to learn Java, maybe this would motivate me ? :P As for Zope IDE vs. CMS IDE ... The line (to me anyways) is blurry. Also, given current projects, I'd focus on Zope 3, which with it's component architecture makes things infinitely flexible, and therefore the line between Zope and "CMS" is not easily distinguishable. Ideally a full featured IDE would be component architecure aware and be able to discover and leverage it (Which interfaces do you have ? Which components ? How do I display this to the user ? Use that for code completion, Zope aware debugger somehow, etc ...) Maybe the ZMI functionality should be abstracted into a web service or something similar so that the ZMI is no longer purely restricted to a web interface? (Maybe it already isn't, admitedly, I don't know ...) Anyways, admitedly all this is above my skill level at this time, but I think the idea has value ... If this were a reasonably priced commercial tool, I probably would buy it mind you. Spending say a few hundred dollars to save hours and hours of work is common sense. though a tool like that would be years away even someone started now! Sounds like the opportunity for a commercial tool.
