As andrew mentioned last friday, we're migrating our public version- control services to a new machine this evening - allotting two hours from 5:00 PM EST (21:00 GMT, i think). If all goes as expected, the only overt difference will be the return of pserver service. (The new machine is signficantly more capable, hardware wise, so tarball production and maybe even checkouts could be appreciably quicker.) Some of the services on the old machine will be reachable during part of the migration time, but readonly - checkins and key deposits will be disabled. Any write activities that get past because we neglected to block them are not guaranteed to be preserved across the transfer. I'll post a reminder soon before the outage time. Over on the zope and zope-dev lists, there's currently agitation to make them members-only mailing lists. The point is that spam could not get thru then (unless posted by a member). What would zodb-dev members like? Posting by a list member would not be affected, unless you attempted to send a message from an email account other than one you subscribed with. In the latter case, your message would be bounced back to you. You could worm around that by subscribing to zodb-dev with that address too, then going to your list membership page on the web and checking the box to suspend email delivery on that account. Then you could post using that account too, but wouldn't also get zodb-dev email on that account. I'm the list admin for zodb-dev, and don't have a preference. If you do, and it's strong enough to scream it, shout. The loudest screamer will win <wink>. By default, I won't change the current policy (anyone can post here, member or not).

Virus-scan module --may be OT

Hey all, This may be [Off Topic], but I think it has some relevance; there is an ever-growing demand for Zope, and for a user-centric system (each user, of course, coming from a wide range of techknowledgable backgrounds) in general. I think consideration of a base-level antivirus module is not only good strategy, but a potentially hot selling-point. Has there been any discussion on integrating a virus-scanning module into the core of Zope? I realize this is likely more of a CMF question; but I'm just wondering if there could be some Zope-level development of a anti-virus module, capable of being extended into the CMF (and subsequently Plone, etc.). It might additionally be extended into both file-upload applications, and potentially email applications--I guess like an antivirus API. Your thoughts would be appreciated, Kris

Five and 2.9

I heard that there was some discussion about the relationship between Martijn Faassen's "Five" project and future versions of Zope. I'd like to say, for the record, that I think Five is an important project. It is one of a number of projects to work out how to use features of Zope 3 in Zope 2. Most of the projects, such as the one here at Zope corp are not as public as Five. I can say, on our part, that this is not from a desire for secrecy, but from a lack of bandwidth to share what we have done. I applaud Martijn's effort to make this a broad and open effort. I view Five as an important step toward Zope 2.9 and encourage people to get involved with it. I certainly intend to be invlved as much as time allows. Of course, Five will change over time, as we get more experience with it. As with any technology, this entails some risk for early adopters.
