request.get vs request.form.get

I have been busy with zope.formlib. See this weblog entry for some background: http://maurits.vanrees.org/weblog/archive/2007/11/search-forms-with-zope-fo… This is Plone 3 with Zope 2.10.4 btw. I discovered there is a difference between getting a value from the request or from request.form when unicode is involved. From a pdb session: >>> request.form.get('SearchableText') u'\xff' >>> request.get('SearchableText') '\xc3\xbf' This is the character Ã¿: a y with something extra on top. :) You can see the same in a python prompt (I hope this is readable for everyone): >>> u"Ã¿" u'\xff' >>> "Ã¿" '\xc3\xbf' This gave me problems while using zope.formlib. In the method zope.app.form.browser.textwidgets.TextWidget._getFormInput() the value is fetched from the request and not request.form. So you get a UnicodeDecodeError. In the weblog entry I mentioned I post some code to guard against that in a setUpWidgets method in your own form page: deliberately overwrite the variable in the request by the variable in request.form. But what I want to ask here is: does something need to be fixed somewhere in zope? Should the value in request and request.form really be the same always? Probably: always unicode? Should zope.app.form.browser.textwidgets.TextWidget._getFormInput() get the value from the form instead of from the request? does zope 3 still have a restricted python environment?

Hi All, I know we have security proxies nowadays and I'm hoping these have made things much more efficient that the old Zope 2 way of doing things (anyone have any ideas on this?) but is there still a way of running a piece of python in an environment where imports are controlled and "dangerous" builtins (ie: ones that would allow you to circumvent the security policy) are restricted? cheers, Chris -- Simplistix - Content Management, Zope & Python Consulting - http://www.simplistix.co.uk

zope.traversing dependencies

I just noticed that zope.traversing depends on dozens of packages, most of them (including a lot of zope.app stuff and the ZODB) only through the dependency on zope.app.applicationcontrol. According to the zope.traversing code, the only occasion on which zope.traversing needs zope.app.applicationcontrol is if some special name is to be traversed in the etc namespace. I suggest trying to import zope.app.applicationcontrol in that case instead of doing it unconditionally, and passing if an ImportError is raised. AFAICS this would result in the names simply not being available if the application controller isn't, which seems sensible to me. I think it is in favour of this suggestion that a comment above the application controller lookup states that the hard-coding was meant only as a preliminary measure until "some sort of registry" takes its place. Unless I overlooked something, this rather simple change would do no harm while shedding a large number of dependencies. Opinions? -- Thomas

Splitting 'Signals' into an egg?

Not sure what Zope 3 is using these days (haven't checked), but Zope 2 had a 'Signals' package that handled signaling events on both Windows and *nix in a somewhat transparent way.
