Blobs and modes

Is there a good reason blobs don't support "b" or "t" in the mode strings passed to "open"? I'm refactoring some code that expects a file-like object to use blobs and it wants to pass "wb" as the mode (which is a sane thing to do). ZopePublication Competing writes/reads

Hi, Just by chance, I pressed the reload button of my browser for quite some time, so that my Zope3-based site was reloaded over and over. I was surprised to find the following in the logs: 2008-10-20T18:45:15 WARNING ZopePublication Competing writes/reads at /BSPSite/act/s/info: database conflict error (oid 0x0733, class zope.session.session.SessionData) Can someone explain me why this happens, if this is something dangerous or if I can forget about it? I tested the site with Apache Bench (ab2), with many concurrent requests and could not reproduce the problem. So my wild guess is the following: I use session.PersistentSessionDataContainer for my session, so every request will probably read/write to some Zope3 container/btree. And then, for some reasons these reads/writes compete, which leads to the above warning. If I use AB2, there's no cookie, thus no session, hence the problem does not arise. On the other hand, the zope root site (the Rotterdam ZMI) seems not to have this problem, as it seems, I can't trigger this warning message with fast reloads. I'm unsure if I should just ignore that or do something about it. Any hints? zope.interface: verifyObject vs properties

There has been a problem with zope.interface's verifyObject function that occurs in conjunction with Python properties: when verifyObject checks for the presence of an object's attribute, it does so by using hasattr() which in turn tries a getattr() call. If the attribute is implemented as a property, this may raise an exception which will be masked by hasattr() due to a bare except: clause. One scenario where this is a problem is a property that performs some component lookup which will succeed at application runtime but not in unit tests where verifyObject is commonly used. While it has also been argued that behaviour so complex that it may raise an Exception should not be implemented as a property in the first place, we believe that verifyObject should handle this case better than it currently does. A possible fix would be to add an additional check for a data descriptor on the object's class if the hasattr() test returns False. Are there any objections against modifying verifyObject in this way? zope.testing 3.6.0 released

3.6.0 of zope.testing is out with my subprocess parallelization branch merged (plus I fixed a few bugs in the trunk). There were several other changes, here's the pertinent part of the release notes: - Added -j option to parallel tests run in subprocesses. - RENormalizer accepts plain Python callables. - Added --slow-test option. - Added --no-progress and --auto-progress options. - Complete refactoring of the test runner into multiple code files and a more modular (pipeline-like) architecture. - Unified unit tests with the layer support by introducing a real unit test layer. - Added a doctest for ``zope.testing.module``. There were several bugs that were fixed: * ``README.txt`` was a really bad default argument for the module name, as it is not a proper dotted name. The code would immediately fail as it would look for the ``txt`` module in the ``README`` package. The default is now ``__main__``. * The tearDown function did not clean up the ``__name__`` entry in the global dictionary. * Fix a bug that caused a SubprocessError to be generated if a subprocess sent any output to stderr. * Fix a bug that caused the unit tests to be skipped if run in a subprocess. -- Benji York Senior Software Engineer Zope Corporation
