Problem with reading zope objects from external method.

I want to draw a circle on a picture that I have stored inside zope. Since the image manipulation module (PIL) is a module not usable from inside zope I have to use an external method. The external method now needs to read in the file (the picture) and this file is located inside zope as a zope object (image file). Hence : I need to get the external method to read a zope object. But I continually fail to read the zope object, how do I do? Zope`s FTP-server

Hi, How does Zope`s FTP-server work? I found myself inside a database when I logged in, or at least that what it looked like. Is there anyway to make or access ordinary folders, like an ordinary ftp-account, using this part of Zope? Can anybody point me to a document etc. that explains what happens, preferrably not the source itself. Thomas

Method LookUp

Hi, I have a little problem but i have no solution for this. I have a project, with many subfolders and their own manager. These managers can add a method called local_nav, where they can store their local navigation-infos. The standard_header-method should look for this local_nav method only in the current folder, but if there is no local_nav, then the local_nav-method of the parent folder would be opened. I use this code to look after local_nav: <dtml-with title_or_id only> <dtml-if local_nav> <dtml-in local_nav> <a href="<dtml-var sequence-item>"><dtml-var sequence-key></a> </dtml-in> </dtml-if> </dtml-with> The method local_nav should only be opened with the standard_html_header when there is local_nav only in this folder. please help

Database adaptor plans discussed at IPC8?

At IPC8, DC asked how the community would feel about a new strategy for dealing with DA's. Some company who had a huge MxN matrix of database drivers for many platforms vs. many databases was mentioned as a possible source for no-cost but binary-only drivers which could be leveraged. Is anything happening on that front, and can anyone please remind me who that company was? Thanks!

ZClass Creation Permission

Hi folks: I'm trying to programatly create an ZClass. But I am facing some problems. With a superuser my ZClass, called AutoForum, is created normally, but when I try to create it with an anonymous user, it does not, it requires a password (wich anonymous user dont have), I have even tried to give all rights to anonymous, but it still doesnt work. This ZClass is pretty simple, it simply catches a ForumNews Object (inherithed from Folder), and clones it into the current directory, i do this by using a Factory. You probably do if you're using a reliable, transactional SQL database server and zope database adapter for data storage! Sure, use the ZODB for the logic and presentation and store data in the ZODB during development.... Once the design is frozen, if you or yours would prefer a thoroughly conservative approach, it's usually not that much bother to convert zclasses to use SQL instead of the ZODB - a couple of ZSQL methods for each zclass.... Given that it's Other People's Money, why not use Other People's SQL servers for that belt and braces feeling? Incidentally, I must point out that I'm not aware of ever losing transactions with the ZODB and I think it's as stable as anything else I use, but I wouldn't use it for storing vast megagobs of data or images. There are perfectly good database servers and filesystems for that. For small databases, the ZODB is faster than ZODB in my experience. How small? A few tens of Megabytes. But for anything big, I think I'd use something else. Is Sybase via the SybaseDA a less anxiety provoking option in terms of proven reliability? ZCatalog on object properties

Hi, I want to add searching features to my product (ListMate - maybe you saw it on Zope News). I have ZClass based objects that store all data in properties. There are no documents to index, just these objects. As I understand it, ZCatalog only indexes _content_ automatically, but for properties, you have to tell it explicitely which property to look at. Is this true so far? Now my problem is that I do not know which properties my objects will have, since they are created by the user via a management interface. So how do I get the catalog to index these properties and find the stuff that's stored in the properties? Threads and locks

I want to limit access to instances of a class I have - "Debt" - so that only one thread at a time will access a given instance. Debt is used to keep tracking of how much people owe us, so I need to make sure they don't get charged twice, etc.. For example, the function: def dostuff(self): # only one thread at a time should call these two lines: sum = self.debtItem.get() self.debtItem.add(23 + sum) Now, I could just use a global lock for all threads who call this function, but that would be a waste since I only don't want two threads accessing the same instance of Debt at the same time, not all instances. In other words, if I have two instance of Debt called A and B, threads can access both A and B at the same time, but you can't have two thread accessing A at the same time. I could add a lock to each instance of Debt. However, each thread has it's own copy of all Persistent objects. So each thread has its own copy of the lock. If I do A.lock.acquire() in one thread, will another thread be acquiring the same lock if it does A.lock.acquire()? -- Itamar S.T. itamars(a)ibm.net
