Q: Specialists, Racks, and ZCatalogs?

Hi all, I've started implementation of a simple ZPatterns based application, and so far things have been going well. The problem is, I'm not sure if I'm doing this right. Here is my setup: Zope 2.2.0 hosted at Codeit.com on a Linux box ZPatterns 0.4.3b2 'BookProduct' product *'BookClass' ZClass (inherits from _ZClass_for_CatalogAware, _ZClass_for_DataSkin) * Methods: editInstanceForm, editInstance, index_html, AllTextMethod 'Books' Specialist * defaultRack which stores 'Book' ZClasses * Methods: addBookForm, addBook, index_html, BookSearch, BookResults (the last two methods are a Z Search Interface) *'Catalog' ZCatalog The 'BookClass' editInstance method contains: [snip] <dtml-call "propertysheets.Standard.manage_changeProperties(REQUEST)"> <dtml-call reindex_object> [snip] The 'Books' Specialist's addBook method contains: [snip] <dtml-let ni="newItem(isbn)"> <dtml-call "ni.propertysheets.Standard.manage_changeProperties(Authors=Authors, Title=Title, Price=Price)"> <dtml-call "ni.index_object()"> </dtml-let> [snip] I've snipped out only the most relevant parts of these methods. As I said, so far this has worked ok. But it seems to me that either the reindex_object or the index_object is in the wrong place, but I'm not sure which. I'm also not sure it's a good or bad idea to place the ZCatalog directly into the Specialist. Also, I would like to replace the three indexes I'm maintaining on the books with a single text index on a computed attribute. I understand that this involves adding a SkinScript to the Rack containing something like 'WITH SELF COMPUTE AllText=AllTextMethod', but I'm unsure of the details. I have a method (AllTextMethod) on the ZClass that returns several fields concatenated as a single string, which I would like to use as a text index. So, I decided to ask for a critique of the application design (such as it is). I also seem to recall mention of 'indexing agents' that might make this a bit more elegant, but haven't found a how-to on the subject. Thanks, Michael Bernstein.

Alpha release of ZODB programming guide

For what seems like half an eternity, I've been working on a ZODB programming guide, written for Python programmers who want to use the ZODB to store data. The document is placed under the GNU Free Documentation License. It's still far from being finished, but while on vacation I filled it out enough to make it alpha-worthy, though note that there are still empty sections. Are you starting zope with ./start, or otherwise including -D when z2.py is executed? That will cause Zope to try to write to the terminal when an FTP connection is made. Phrase search in ZCatalog

I read that ZCatalog supports phrasing. Yet it seems like searching for ['foo bar'] has the results of foo OR bar. How do I search for a phrase (in a TextIndex) ? Oren.

Problem: manage_workspace redirects to index_html

I goto http://localhost/manage and login. I get the management tree on the left but right hand pain is viewing index_html rather than manage_main. With a bit of testing and looking at code I see that manage_workspace method is being called as an anonymous user which is why it redirects to the index_html. All other methods seem to have the manager user (the tree shows the right user). I can try manage_main directly on things and it works fine. I can view and change the security settings using manage_access and they look fine. Something really weird is going on and its bugging the hell out of me. I'm using IE 5.01 on w2k. I think this may be a problem with passive/active FTP sessions and (possibly) proxies settign between you and the Zope instance. I've had the same problem with other FTP clients when I try to FTP into a Zope server: at one client's office they do NAT, which acts as a proxy - around 60% of the time my FTP session will lock up on a PUT, and the WHOLE zope instance dies. I had written it off as somethign to do with the clien'ts network - but if its happening to others out there too, then maybe its time we launched an investigation into this? The problem I noticed when I looked at it previously is that no error was ever logged, even with the debug option turned on - the zope instance just died mysteriously. Anyone know of a way off-hand to force zope to do a stack traceback to the error log when an FTP error (or some other unknown error) takes it down? Once we track down the problem we could at the least prevent it from killing anything but it's own thread, if not fix it completely...
