cataloging binary files (pdf's, word docs...)

I'm trying to come up with a way to catalog PDF's and Word docs. It is easy to write python methods to pull the text ouf of these. The problem is that we already have tons of them in our ZODB as file objects. The only thing I can think of is to make a zclass class for each type (ie. PDFFile type) that has a method that knows how to extract the text from the pdf and have zcatalog catalog that property. But this means re-creating all the binary files currenlty in our ZODB. Can any one offer any better suggestions? I could write a python method that extracted the text based on mime type but I can't go back and ad that method to each file object. Thanks for any help. ^Roman

I think versions (at least the little diamonds :-) work through cookies....hence you won't get those visual indications on Emacs-edited code :-) Jon Brisbin

how can prevent toXML output <?xml ?>

Thanks to Martijn Pieters <mj(a)digicool.com>, I can sent out any sub-tree of an xml document now. The problem is : when toXML apply to the xmldocument root, it gives the <?xml ?> tag also. How can I prevent this? or How can I detect if it is the root so the dtml method does not insert the <? xml tag? Now, I still got the following: 1. embed the <dtml-> tags inside the xmlDocument. and make the toXML render them before making it a xml file. However, the currently dtml-var does not accept ending / or </dtml-var>, that is the problem 2. make other zope objects response to toXML which I think since we can export them in xml format, it is possible, isn't it? 3. XMLDocument does not receive utf-8 encoding correctly. 4. Zcatalogue does not like utf-8 encoding especially chinese, japanese, korean, ...

I see no indication (red diamond) of such a way changed DTML method (or other object) and the version tells me, that there is no change in this version. calling DTMLMethods from python

I need to call a DTMLMethod that is contained in the ZODB from python, as a template to display the calling object. Tried it that way: def display_template(self): root_folder=self.get_root() # returns a folder object that contains templates/template_set/meldung return root_folder.templates.template_set.meldung(self) Calling display_template returns "access denied" followed by a login-box. the superuser login isn't accepted, just returns access denied again. Using mapping instead of specifiing the client-object (self) works for attributes, but not for contained objects. Is there another posibility to call DTMLMethod-objects from python? Alex

Automatically reindexing CatalogAware objects

The problem with CatalogAware objects is that you have to add self.reindex_object() to any method that updates them. I think I've thought of a way to solve this - tell me if/where I'm wrong: Every time a CA object gets changed a transaction is commited, which means the object gets pickled and saved into the ZODB. Every time an object is pickled its __getstate__ method is called. So, we define the following __getstate__ for the CatalogAware class: def __getstate__(self) self.reindex_object() # is __getstate__ supposed to return self? return self Would this work? -- Itamar S.T. itamars(a)ibm.net
