How to develope a ZObject to connect to an socket server?

Hi all! I'm trying to develope a zope object that connects to a external socket server in order to comunícate with it and receive some events (Maybe I need a thread to process events). The problem is how to establish the connection at the start of zope and to disconnect at the end. After some test assigning the socket server object to _v_ variables in the zope object, it missed the connection after a while. It seems that it can't maintain the reference stored in the _v_ variable. I thing that the behaviour is something like database connections and I'm looking into some database connection objects to find out the mechanism used. I have created (yet another, perhaps) "easy Zope install" branch off the current Zope trunk. It allows for a "./configure; make; make install" sort of Zope installation for the source release. It also includes a version of the nascent "zctl.py" that has been floating around unreleased to make starting, stopping, and debugging Zope easier. I'd like to know if folks are in favor of such a beast. In theory (and as a Debian user), I like the idea of support for as distro-neutral of a linux distribution as possible; on the other hand, supporting RedHat 7.2 is a must for Zope accessability to new developers (since there are a lot of RedHat 7.2 systems out there). Is Python 2.1 under woody really compiled with LFS support? That would be great, but still likely means that your best bet is to build Zope from source, or just use the Zope packages in Debian Main. Anyway, Debian 3.0 uses glibc 2.2 (I'm not sure if this is a big deal???). A thought: rather than require yet another Zope binary distribution to be packaged for Debian by Zope Corp (esp. Since Zope packages are fairly decent in Debian), the Zope.org download page might want to contain a link to: http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/search_packages.pl?keywords=zope&searchon =names&subword=1&version=all&release=all for Debian users, just like it mentions the contributed RPMs. Sean -----Original Message----- From: Nagarjuna G. I work on Debian Woody 3.0, and the python 2.1 is compiled with large file system support. Zope 2.4.3 and Python 2.2

Hi there, are there any known issues or problem running Zope 2.4.3 under PYthon 2.2 instead of 2.1. I'am asking because my sysadmin has setup a new linux-box with RH7.3. RH7.3 only has Python 2.2 installed and there are no RPMs compiled against Python 2.2. If there are no problems a would try to build a src.rpm for RH 7.3 + Python 2.2. Thanks in advance, andre

ZEO, FileStorage, and Undo

Hello, We have a large FileStorage database ~5 gigs. When any of our users click would the "Undo" tab in a management screen the request would eventually time out and our ZopeWatch script would restart the server. Well this didn't happen every time, it only happens if 20 transactions haven't occurred, or haven't occurred recently. In either of these cases the entire ZODB is searched for transactions. So I wrote a patch for undoLog in FileStorage to batch by days instead of # of transactions. This lets us show batches of 2 days at a time instead of 20 transactions. Thus we never have to search more than 2 days worth of the database. I also MonkeyPatched the manage_UndoForm in App.UndoSupport. While doing this I noticed that at the beginning of undoLog FileStorage acquires a lock (_lock_acquire). Is this necessary if it's only doing reads? We have a ZEO with 3 Zeo Clients and 1 Zeo Server when someone hits Undo the Zeo Server locks and all 3 clients sit waiting. It appears from experience as a user that_lock_acquire locks reads and writes. We have a system with potential for thousands of content maintainers. It is undesirable to have our entire site die for 20 seconds everytime one of them clicks "Undo". We could disable Undos, however the transactional database was one of the reasons we choose Zope. I'm all for putting together a proposal to do this, soliciting comments, and contributing to the effort. What would be the right venue for that? On the other hand, AFAIK, the addition of a depth query feature to PathIndex as it is wouldn't likely break existing indexes. And given that Andy's need (get metadata for a Cataloged object, given some cached referecne, in this case a path, to it) could be filled by the Catalog itself (or changes to it), I'm not sure what other features would be needed out of PathIndex? In brief, what I would like: results = Catalog.searchResults(path={'query':myContainersPath, 'depth':0, 'level':0}) Where depth means: -1 In parent of path specified (up one) 0 Contained within path specified 1 Contained in path specified or directly in one of its children 2 Same as above, but also in child container's child No depth specified means behavior is like current functionality in path indexes. A brief glance at docs and code gives me the impression that this could peacefuly co-exist with level. Weird FactoryDispatcher __getattr__

Has anybody any experience or insight into the FactoryDispatcher, and specifically in it's __getattr__? Really specifically: Why the **** does the FactoryDispatchers __getattr__ get called when I make a on a subobject of the object with the FactoryDispatcher? 1. I'm not doing the getattr on the FactoryDispatcher. 2. getattr itself should find the attribute, and it's my understanding that if getattr finds the attribute with the normal mechanism __getattr__ shouldn't be called at all. So I don't at all understand why the FactoryDispatcher __getattr__ gets called, and hence I'm not able to prevent it from happening, which I want to, because I need to find attributes from inside the FactoryDispatcher __getattr__ and it gets recursive.
