I'm not sure I understand the reasons why this solves the consolidation problem (i.e. I have 2 dozen ZEO clients and 2 ZSSs and want to manage them remotely in a single interface). Please explain. disutils win32 2.6.1b2 setup.py layout questions

(Originally posted in zope.general, I figure this group more often compiles the source) I want to create a Zope 2.6.1b2 instance running on Python 2.2.2, and one amenable to building C extensions found in various add-on products. I have one interim deployment to Win32 until we migrate an MSSQL database to PostgresSQL on linux, so the fact that this is Win32 may be making it harder than it needs to be. I downloaded the source tarball and was impressed by how well it compiled using distutils (I have VS.NET on this machine, so cl.exe is readily available). Can I solicit some advice on layout parameters to the setup.py script? I don't fully know what the three parameters imply yet, and my recent attempt didn't quite line up: C:\Program Files\Python\ (Python 2.2.2, default python win32_all and other add-ons installed) C:\Program Files\Zope261b2>python setup.py install --home=C:\Progra~1\Zope261b2 --install-platlib=C:\Progra~1\Zope261b2\lib\python --install-purelib=C:\Progra~1\Zope261b2\lib\python What I'm seeking is a Zope laid out with similarity as appropriate to the win32 binary distribution, except using the python in C:\Progra~1\Python\ for all non-zope libraries. FWIW, I have a working win32 binary Zope 2.6.1b2 in C:\Program Files\Zope which I can refer to, if someone can point out the post-build steps that don't happen on Win32 user-compiles. After the basic install is working, I'll get to work on setting up a ZEO2 local server, local client setup that uses the resultant layout for instance_home and software_home, another topic I'll need some tips on, what with ZEO2 moving into ZODB and the possibilities of using the new DBTab. I hope you all don't mind, but I've moved this to Zope-dev. I would like to propose that it be possible without modification (default behavior) in a future version of Zope to import the time module and its methods safely into TTW Python Scripts. I haven't used this yet in TTW code (I've had to work around it), but it seems like it might be good to un-restrict it, especially for CMF installations that heavily utilize date metadata. time.localtime(time.time()) is, AFAICT, the only way to determine if you are in standard or DST at any point in time during the year. You can't have a page-template appropriately display correct times for content from multiple time-zones without this (I'm sure many CMF installations will need this), and it seems silly to write an external method for this; allowing import of the time module is a good workaround, but I would suggest it be enabled by default in Zope. My particular use-case is AP newswire stories which are in EST/EDT. The timezone offset changes for this twice a year, and having a fixed calculation based upon some assumption of a fixed timezone offset in my own timezone (PST/PDT) won't work. I need to be able to know my own timezone offset to do the math, and for this I need to use time.localtime(time.time())[8] to get it. I'm sure "community" sites and things like blogs, or anything else that works across the geographic boundaries of differing time zones could use this too. Thoughts? PIL - pilfonts - zope

I'm trying to write a zope product that uses PIL (python imaging library) but when I try to load a font with ImageFont.load or ImageFont.load_path it can't find the glyph file (.pbm,.png) that is in the same directory of (.pil) file. override __of__

Is there any way to override __of__ on an object? I've tried it but for whatever reason, Implicit.__of__(self, object) says that self is not an Acquirer even though the object is a subclass of Implicit. Making private documents viewable by members in CMF

CMF comes with a default workflow with three states: private, pending, and published. When an object is in the private state, only the user who created it and site managers can view and change it. How do I change the roles or security to allow Members to view each others private documents without making them managers? Unsynced ZEO Clients and Undo

Hello, We've run into a problem with Zope 2.5.1 and ZEO 1 where a user does an Undo and some of the ZEO clients reflect the change and others do not. I believe it has to do with caches getting out of sync. Is this a known problem? It has happened to us at least 4 times that I know of. Usually we will restart all of the clients and remove the caches, to fix the problem, but this is not desirable. property type

According to docs and testing (in the interpreter) I can make a read-only calculated attribute using property() (I know that setters do not work w/ non-new-style classes). So I tried the following: class CMixin: def getter(self): return 'test' prop = property(getter) and when I try to mix in this object w/ a Folder object, the instance returns <property object at 0x8b45edc> for the 'prop' attribute. absolute_url: why not publishable?

Visit foo/absolute_url and you will find that it "has an empty or missing docstring". Is this by design, or is it just something that nobody has needed? I would like to propose making it callable TTW, unless somebody knows a reason it should not be. I could make use of it in two ways: 1) every now and then I forget that it doesn't work, and I type stuff like http://my_zope_site/foo/bar/baz/absolute_url when I'm not sure if baz is being acquired from foo, from bar, or the site root (or maybe even a CMF skin) and I want to find out quickly. 2) (kind of esoteric) It would be nice to be able to easily get "normalized" URLs from zope objects into non-zope systems that link to Zope content. e.g. today I wished I could tell a JSP developer at my company to use something like <a href="<%= stupidHttpClient('http://zope_server/foo/bar/absolute_url') %>"> (... and yes, we do have something like a stupidHttpClient.) - Paul Winkler http://www.slinkp.com Look! Hi Shane I have been thinking about this last night. I think you should provide some sort of out of band signalling method. But given that Adaptable Storage sits below ZODB, which sit's below Zope, I feel that the signalling method should be directed at the lowest level. This means that method doesn't need to be exposed to ZODB, and if people use ZODB without Zope they can use Adaptable storage and not need Zope to perform the signalling through a URL. (A Zope front end could then use it, or anything else for that matter) I would suggest a something like a named pipe, and do a blocked read from a python thread (would this be portable and can you actually do that ;-). Then use a simple protocol of sending the path to the file that has been changed. (That way you also get a FIFO queue of events.) You could make it that if the path is a directory then everything under could be treated as changed.
