initgroups

On upgrading to ZOPE 2.6.1 on HP-UX I get problems with the daemon not switching user. This is caused by the compilation of initgroups not passing #if defined(__unix__) || defined(unix) This appears to be the only place where unix or __unix__ is expected to be defined. Where is it expected to be set. Take out the #if and Zope works. Is there a better way of determining whether initgroups exists. I looked for any other version in CVS but it doesn't appear to be there at all. David.

Crazy idea: ZClasses

It's Friday, so I reserve the right to post crazy ideas. :-) Ape could revitalize ZClasses. The biggest problem with ZClasses has always been the inability to use version control and other utilities to maintain ZClass code. Ape could fix that by giving developers the option of storing ZClass code on the filesystem. It doesn't allow it now, but it could without huge effort. I thought of this a couple of weeks ago. I pushed it out of my mind because Zope 3 will eliminate the need for ZClasses, but the idea kept coming back. So if anyone wants to take this on, I'll provide direction, but I don't plan to do it all myself. Shane

Hi all, In the ZMI of a plone site, I get the following error when accessing the 'Elements' tab of the portal_metadata tool: ====== Error Type: NameError Error Value: name 'portal_types' is not defined ====== I have read that this message occurs when you do not access the portal tool from within a CMF site. But isn't a plone site also a CMF site? If this is incorrect, how does one go about accessing the CMF site or interface or whatever? ZEO Client nonresponsive

Hello, I add up to two earlier postings where a nonresponsive, hanging or seemmingly frozen ZEO client is described: http://mail.zope.org/pipermail/zope-dev/2003-March/019179.html http://mail.zope.org/pipermail/zope-dev/2003-February/018681.html Esp. the later one is an accurate description of the situation we experiece too: (..)All the zope processes were still running, CPU usage was low (almost nil for python), there was plenty of free physical memory & swap. Yet Zope was not responding to requests. A look at the access logs revealed that zope had not logged anything since the time we noticed the outage(..) (..)A restart seemed to fix everything, though one of the zeo servers went down again (same symptoms) about 20 minutes after starting. Restarted it again and both servers have been fine for hours now(..) Using the "debugspinngingzope' howto did not help for me - I could not get any usable information out of gdb. I can add some details on my setup, which hopefully helps analysing the problem. Setup (all on Debian linux 2.4.18, Zope2.6.1, ZEO2.0.2, DBTab 1.1): ZEO server, serving a FileStorage and a TemporaryStorage (to share SESSION objects between the clients). I also tested a setup where a regular FileStorage was used. 2 ClientStorage nodes, using DBTab to mount the served FileStorage as "/", and the TemporaryStorage as "/temp_folder". This nonresponsive behaviour was also seen with just one ZEO client. However, when this one node uses a default "temp_folder" as being created at Zope startup (so not mounted from the ZEO server, but a TemporaryFolder), I so far did *not* experience the nonresponsiveness. ODBC to the ZODB?

Has anyone done any work or even had any ideas about having ODBC access to the ZODB? Possibly using gadfly as the SQL engine? This would be incredibly powerful to have... Richard

[Bug] FileStorage packing looses data

ATT: cross post We have a nasty FileStorage packing bug <http://collector.zope.org/Zope/875> The bug is caused by a strange handling of backpointers during pack's copying phase: the code checks whether the backpointer goes to a packed or unpacked position. When it goes to a packed record, it guesses what new value the backpointer should have -- and it guesses wrong. This can lead to data loss! Currently, "pack" treats its two phase quite asymmetrically with respect to position resolution: Packing phase: backpointers are resolved "prev" and "nvprev" positions are determined via "index/nvindex" Copying phase: backpointers are not resolved but adjusted depending on whether they point to packed or unpacked records "prev" and "nvprev" are only adjusted via "index/nvindex" when they point to packed data. Otherwise they are adjusted via a constant offset. I do not see any reason why this should not be symmetrical: all backpointers resolved all positions determined via "index/nvindex" No more guessing, no longer an offset that needs to be held constant. What is correct for packed data should be correct for not yet packed data, as well. Do you see an error in this argument? Dieter

That'd be fine, but it would require a code audit. And third party products might fail. You could use ModuleSecurityInfo (see developer's guide) to put this code in a module and import from the python script. I'm not sure if we'd be able to safely expose import of the bad request exception directly from OFS, this might require some refactoring.
