Subobjects in descendants of Object Manager

I'm still using Zope 1.11.0pr1 these days, so correct me if this has been fixed in 2.0 -- but there seems to be no way to permit a Z Class descendant of Object Manager to hold _any_ type of subobject. If I go under "Subobjects" for the Z Class and select all object types in the list, that's not really enough: If I add new Z Classes or products to Zope, these objects will not be automatically permitted as subobjects. So there should be perhaps be a "Allow any object" checkbox on the "Subobjects" page along with the "kinds of things" list box, whaddya think? -- Alexander Staubo http://www.mop.no/~alex/ "What the hell, he thought, you're only young once, and threw himself out of the window. Win32 port of Zope 2.00a1

Hi, I've been playing with Zope2.00a1 on both Linux and Win32. I have noticed that it is considerably harder to get it working on Win95/NT. To assist those ppl who want to try it out on Windows I have created an MS VC6.0 workspace + project file for it. By compiling under "Win32 Release" mode MS C will create a zope.exe with all the Zope extensions built-in to it. To compile this you will need the Python-1.5.2 source to generate the python15.lib and python15.dll. As I don't have externally accessable web space if you want a copy please email me @ s341625 at student dot uq dot edu dot au. I am planning to create a python script to automatically convert from unix Zope extensions and another to install it under windows. I'd be happy to create win32 binaries for the Zope project. They need to be patched to return cPersistence on load error instead of cDocumentTemplate (plus a few others that I've forgotten this freezing arvo;)

Property sheet inheritance for Z Classes

Possible suggestion for improvement: When creating Z Classes that use inheritance, sometimes you'd just like to extend a property sheet from the base class(es), rather than implementing a lowest-common-denominator sheet at the base-class level. Is there a way of doing selective or accumulated inheritance on property sheets, or can it be implemented? For example, a descendant class might to inherit properties "title" and "author", hide the inherited property "keywords", add add the property "subject". Visibility modification might not be easily doable or even desirable (haven't thought that one through yet), but the lack of inheritance seems like a serious omission to me. regex.compile used quite often

I've been reading through ZPublisher/HTTPRequest.py, and I noticed several uses of regex.compile. Oddly enough, the result is thrown out after one use and recomputed later. Isn't regex.compile an expensive operation? Should the results of regex.compile by stored between uses? Cheers, Eric

Publishing DTML Documents with an external method, and an odd side question question

I hate to whine with 'help me' questions, so my apologies ahead of time. I can understand how you generate an HTML file using DocumentTemplate.HTMLFile, but I'm trying to figure out how to use it with objects. Here's what I ideally want to do: I have an external method which I'll call with a parameter and some hidden state information, and it should use that information to look up one of a group of web pages (which I'm storing in the same folder as DTML Documents) and return the appropriate page. I originally tried just returning the assigned DTML page, but the document comes back in 'safe' html (all the <'s have been converted to &lt's and so on). Incidentally, looking at this and the ZDP and not wanting to impose too much, does anyone have starting points as to what files I should look at to understand how ZOPE is publishing objects? I'd like to know how gets and puts are stored, and how the various index_html objects are actually rendered and put on screen rather than continually coming back.

problems uploading files with internet explorer

hello, i have problems uploading files with internet explorer, although it works perfectly fine with netscape. here is the code: def update(self, image=None, REQUEST=None): if image1 == None: items['image'] = '' else: headers = hasattr(image, "headers") and image1.headers or None items['image'] = (headers is None) and image or image.read() when a file is uploaded items['image'] contains it's name, instead of it's contents. i hope someone can help me solve this problem. regards, pawel PS: the whole thing does not work when stripping of the part with "headers"

Zope does dynamic, Linux kernel does static pages?

Hey Zopesters - Just thought I'd point out something thart came up on the linux kernel mailing list this week. Apparently, as part of the aftermath of that whole Mindcraft 'benchmark' fiasco, it came to the kernel developers' attention that under NT, IIS has special status - it has some sneaky system calls that end up with the NT kernel effectively doing all the serving of static HTML pages. This had been discussed some time ago as an interesting idea under Linux, but this time around, someone started implementing it. It's still alpha, but it's at: http://www.fenrus.demon.nl This being Linux, it's not specific to any one HTTP server, it'll cooperate with anything that listens on a port. Basically, it'll handle serving the simple static pages directly from the filesystem as fast as possible, and pass anything else on to the userland application. Linus Torvalds himself seems to like the idea, and mentioned: So you could even use a pretty much unmodified apache (or other) web server to do all the non-static cases - although it would probably imply that the user-level deamon would be better off being optimized for the "uncommon" case because it never sees the common case. Hmm, a user-level deamon optimized for the "uncommon" non-static case: do I hear Zserver calling? Admittedly, it's still alpha, but anyone playing with Zope2 on linux might want to look at this. To use it effectively, you'd need to use absolute URLS to static pages (and images) outside the zope ORB, so the module can find them. In the long run, some sort of static 'shadow' directory structure, perhaps managed via one of the new ORB3 alternative storage managers, could allow the Zope developer to mark objects as 'static pages' that get pushed out to files, so the kernel daemon could see them. Hmm, this might even allow Zope's cache to become accessible to the kernel deamon? Does Zope do any caching of rendered of pages? If it did, That'd be a speed win for 'quasi-static' things that change slowly compared to typical user sessions. In fact, the caching would be a win no matter how you serve pages.
