Zope-2.0.0a2 remarks

Installed the latest Zope release on a SunOS box and everything seems to work fine. Some remarks ... If a DTML method contains non-ascii characters the Publisher prompts for a file download. I think if this is a feature it should be optional. Also I could not import a folder that was exported from Zope-1.10.2. Zope & PIL on Win32, not a name clash issue, but it still don't work

If anyone has PIL working with Zope (any version) on Win32, could you tell me which PIL modules you installed and where you got your _tkinker? I can't even get PIL to work with 1.5.2 from the command line. If I use last falls PIL win32 binary release, I can get viewer.py to work from the command line, but this release is 1.5.1b2 based and has it's own TCL/TK. If I apply the April Pil win32 patch, the command line viewer shows my .bmp in black and white... If I move PIL .py's to Python/lib/PIL, add __init__.py and modify Image.py as Dragon De Monsyne, I still can't get viewer.py to work with 1.5.2 PythonWin (or command line) because PyImaging... isn't defined in my _tkinter.. I'm then using the TK and TCL that came with PY152.exe Should I have _tkinter.dll or _tkinker.pyd? I'm lost.. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks. ZPublisher doesn't commit transaction if target not callable

This isn't necessarily a Zope bug, in the sense that it affects anything in Zope proper at the present time, to my knowledge. However, it could be under certain circumstances, and it does affect ZPublisher-based code I'm currently working on. ZPublisher.Publish begins a transaction right before determining whether the to-be-published object is callable. If in its determination the object is *not* callable, it falls through to a return *without committing the transaction*. This makes two rather questionable assumptions: first, that the 'transaction' object can handle unbalanced begin/commit operations, and second, that the response.setBody() call (and therefore the object's asHTML() method) has no side-effects. The first may hold true for ZODB, and the second may hold true for DC-written objects, but both are probably bad assumptions for ZPublisher as a whole. Another, similar assumption present is that the object traversal process is side-effect free and need not be part of the overall transaction. If I have a situation where an object does (for example) logging of certain sub-object accesses to a relational DB from a __bobo_traverse__ method, it will not get wrapped in a transaction, and will not be rolled back if an error occurs later. I currently work around this by using a __bobo_before__ that ensures a transaction is started, and having my transaction object ignore ZPublisher's .begin() call. Unfortunately, there is no similar workaround for the asHTML issue, since at the time of a __bobo_after__ call, there is no way to tell whether the transaction should've been committed or aborted. May I suggest changing the relevant code (return response.setBody(object)) to: t=response.setBody(object) if transaction: transaction.commit() return t This would at least fix the mismatched begin/commits. Ideally, I'd like to see the transaction begun at the very beginning of the publishing traversal, but as I said, I have an existing workaround for that. Thanks. _____ _/__) ___/

Product palette?

Hi there, As I install products, write a product, and hear about ZClasses (haven't used it yet), I start worrying about a very large list of products that can be used, which might make the management interface harder to use. Also one can't categorize products (perhaps by origin: Zope base, Local, Other, or perhaps by function: Document, Folderlike, Database, etc). The classic solution for this (I'm familiar with Delphi) is to supply a palette. That is, you can categorize products into various palettes, and you pick the products from them. Of course this gives other potential interface problems, as one now first has to select the palette, then the product one wants to paste into the folder. But I'm sure some fancy HTML or JavaScript can alleviate this. I suppose this falls under management interface improvement projects. I've heard vague rumors people were working on this, but don't know anything more. Has anybody else thought about this idea? Perhaps DigiCool is planning to come out with a whole sophisticated acquisition based system? :) I'm interesting in hearing what the plans are in this regard. Regards, Martijn

Server crashes on Cobalt RaQ

Greetings, Here's a problem for you experts. I have installed Zope 1.10.2 on a Cobalt RaQ (Python 1.5.2). Everything seems to run fine until I get a very persistent error that shuts down the server.
