masquerading python products as functions

Hi, I am trying to make a product act like an external method, or dtmlmethod. Basically I have taken the minimal product and added a __call__ function. It works fine, and can be called as a function of the object that contains it. The problem is that the minimal objects namespace is also pushed onto the stack, and to get out of it I need to go through self.aq_parent. Reading though all the help I could find I tried adding the following (as DTMLMethod suggests.) #Documents masquerade as functions class func_code: pass func_code=func_code() func_code.co_varnames='self','RQUEST','RESPONSE' func_code.co_argcount=3 This doesn't seem to do anything to the namespace problem. Actually, reading through DTMLMethod and ExternalMEthod aren't helping at all. mapply.py seems equally unhelpful, though I can see some of what it is trying to do. Reading it also made me wonder why people say the above code make Documents masquerade as functions, it seems in mapply, that if __call__ is defined, then it is bound to f in mapply anyway. It seems to me to be in the __call__ method that things are important where namespaces are passed to HTML.__call__ I am obviously missing some fundamental points or sequences that would help me to understand this, I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction, either documentation, or some simple explanation, that would make reading through that code more obvious. Hi, I'm a student, doing my Masters in Clinet/Server Computing. I was interested in Content Server stuff, thats why I decided to do my master project on Content Server. I was going through the web, and found Zope Application server, and decided to work on it. Right now Zope works with any web server that supports the Common Gateway Interface (CGI). I want to develope some adapter that will enable Zope working with any web server that supports ASP. I downloaded the Zope source code that is available at http://www.zope.org/Products/Zope/2.3.3 I want to play with the source code of Zope application server to have a better idea of this application, but couldn't find any good documentation. I'm wandering whether thats the only peace of code availble for users????? Is that full source code for Zope Application server, if not where can I get the full source code? Do u know any documentation which will be helpful for understanding and playing aound with source code?? Please respond to this mail if u have answer to my questions. How long below the radar?

Hold that thought. In order to fully answer the question I have to ask myself why I choose to use a "below the radar" system in the first place. I'ts said that nothings truly *Free* as in product advertising everything has its cost. When we look at the *cost* compared to other systems Zope/Python wins hands down in all the *right* areas. Its just plain abuse of money and power that keeps Zope/Python where it is. Does'nt matter if it's coming from this camp or another something must be done soon. It boils down to this. Back in the old days if you had something faster, quicker, and better you cleary would be the winner. Too many people were worried about their evestments so of course they stuck with the *hot* tickets. But it would be too expensise to go head to head with the big boys no I think that true interprise is going to be in turmoil. For Instance now that things like MCSE, and CISCO are now part of public college institutions that means what? The climate is such that if its not Microsoft or Sun forget it. I'm not knocking either company I support them 100%. But here's my example. I'm taking a course at a local college and I sit next to a guy that says he only needs to get his MCSE and he will be gainfully employed. I asked him if he felt the need to learn any programming languages and he said no. I doubt very much that this person would ever be inclined to select anything Zope/Python. The big companies spent their money well. Do like they do.DC needs to create Zope Certificatied Desginer/Technicans and shops. Make it commercial *looking* as *freely* possible. Ok back to whats wrong with it. Secure E-commerce Support out the box is one thing. I think we need to hear more of zope coming from out of the major players mouth as a major player. Or is it? There are quite a few choices out there, but what really makes Zope/Python the clear winner. They already have most of the commercial qualities needed to be the best of the best. We have to make them see the value. like Red Hat Distros, Certifications, and plug and play software. Things like Talk shows would be nice. Hey I got dibs on the Zope Certification/Testing center track/fishbowl/proposal thing if one doesnt already exist? and it's possible for a 3rd party to do such a thing. The thing that I can't understand is that in my state the government workers threatened to strike, and dot-coms failed because of money problems. They also have millions tied up in building a technology center. My thing is that Things like Zope/Python should be taught/used right along side the others in the schools. DC should be sending free to schools an easy to install package that allows them to have some limited *commercial* looking front-end. If they can actually see and feel and *burn* copies of an actuall cool looking product CD with all the products on the CD. I need some sleep, Cheerio -Jimbo

HowTo: Make an Image/File a DataSkin ???

Hello .. sorry I bother you again with my ZPatterns related Questions .. I just try it once again ;-) I have a Folder w/Customizer in that I want to store Objects of type Image or File (CMFDefault.Image to be correct) in it. I needed to make the DataSkin the "first" subclass of File to ensure the datamanager-machinery will work (not_found v_dm) for example: class File(DataSkin , OFS.Image.File , PortalContent , DefaultDublinCoreImpl ): this basically works fine except when I rename this object the different behaviour of Dataskin (stores its id in self.id) and Image/File (stores its id in self.__name__ and recommends the use of ob.getId() to get the id). XMLDocument Memory Leak

I've found a memory leak in the XMLDocument Product by Amos at DC. I use it for storing and presenting small XML documents (30-40 lines or so) and do only simple things such as ... <dtml-in "getElementsByTagName('option')"> <tr><td bgcolor="#cccc99"><dtml-var "text_content()"></td></tr> </dtml-in> by 'viewing' the document with a method thus ... anEMQtobeshown/viewEMQ I suspected it may be the cause of a memory leak but haven't been able to trace it until using the LeakFinder product. The refcounts for Products.XMLDocument.XMLDocument.Element Products.XMLDocument.Node.Text increase and increase until python is using most of my physical memory and the server grinds to a halt. http://www.onexamination.com/ I have tried patching the classes as suggested in the LeakFinder useage but have no results to show. Anyone else using XMLDocument? Can someone plug the leak? Dean Jenkins.

Hi Zope Folks, My apologies if this is not the proper forum for such a post. Please point me to a more appropriate list if you know of one. Also, sorry for the extended absence, things are hectic lately. I have been trying to keep up with the lists, but as you all must know, doing that well could be a full time job. Not to revive the "Zope needs an E-Commerce, Membership, etc." thread that flamed not far from here in the recent past, but something just turned up that is hard to ignore. So, I have a request for you each to kindly consider. Please try to set aside whatever pressing need you're currently focused on for a moment and look at the very big picture. Zope has such potential and is already serving so many with unparallaled power and flexibility, but is still "in the closet". Maybe that is the natural state for a rapidly maturing Open Source project. After all, Linux itself was a "labor in obscurity" sort of amateur project for nearly a decade. Please note, the true meaning of "amateur" derives from it's root word which is latin for "love". Linus is not the first to procalaim the value of efforts extended for the love of the art. If so, then "never mind" (as Gilda Radner used to say in the persona of the perenially confused Emily Litella). On the other hand, if you like myself remain mystified that Zope hasn't made a massive splash in the Application Server market, then maybe it's time to think about "the grand plan". This blurb struck a chord, and frankly kind of ticked me off: http://serverwatch.internet.com/news/2001_07_09_a.html Most of the substance is quoted below. 'the worldwide application server market bucked all trends and grew 128 percent, reaching almost $2.2 billion in 2000' 'on top of 1999's worldwide revenue growth of 110 percent to $957 million.' When a market reaches the level of maturity that the [application server software platform] ASSP market reached in 1999, annual growth usually slows, not accelerates," said Steve Garone, IDC's vice president of Application Development and Deployment research."' '"Survival in the ASSP market requires more than just ASSP products. Vendors need to provide an e-business platform that includes all the functions necessary to build and deploy e-business applications, leveraging the ASSP as the foundation layer," Garone said. "BEA and IBM both understand this requirement."' Now for the big picture part. Certainly one of the great strengths of Open Source projects has been diversity, and scratching the assorted itches of a broad range of users. How could we truly appreciate Python, if there had been no Perl? ;) On the other hand, with a global cadre of talented Zope users toiling away, there is bound to be more than a little duplicate effort. How about treating some of the most critically needed Zope modules as a community project? Can a community wide process be adopted so that an architecture can be established, and the components then be built by individuals or small teams, and then dropped into place? Such a scheme wouldn't rule out duplicate effort, if folks think that the benefits of jovial competition and meritocracy are essential, but it could help point all the wonderful things that Zope contributors have and continue to create in a direction where more stuff plays nice with it's neighbors, at the very least. ZPatterns was intended to enable some of this, and of course there are other approaches as well. Getting Zope to a point where it's own elements can all "get along" would be a great first step, but the ultimate goal is actually much bigger than this. For example, see the work underway at GNU Enterprise (gnue.org) The GNUe project has settled on some of the finest that Open Source has to offer when selecting their foundation toolkit. The concept behind the GNUe Forms has echoes in the Zope world already. A GNUe form based application has it's "screens" defined as XML files, which can then be rendered by any of a number of cross-platform clients. An XML based application interface would be treated as an "aspect" of the implementation. There is no reason a Zope client could not be provided that would instantly empower the GNUe suite as a Zope plug-in, or Zope as a Web enabling plug-in to GNUe. If you are wondering why GNUe matters, take a look. The GNUe team is building nothing less than a GNU licensed Enterprise Resource Management system, along with virtually every critical business function from financials to B2B and EDI. Maybe flying under the radar is exactly the right place to be, if it empowers Open Source service providers to help small to mid-size customers to leverage a full ERP system. GNUe will be the kind of technology that only the GMs and GEs of the world have been able to afford, up to now. Unfortunately, my experience is that such customers are even less informed about the benefits of Open Source options, and thus even less likely to embrace a "no-name" solution. This gotcha calls for a second front, the "emerging from obscurity" part that must accompany the coordination and cooperation part. Treading carefully enough to become recognizable, but not enough to appear as a "threat" to the likes of the high end competition is a strategy that has worked before. See Quicken and Quickbooks, by way of examples. By adopting a service centered approach, and focusing on customers that the "big boys" weren't interested in anyhow, Zope and GNUe can gain a foothold in the conciousness of small business, and build toward the larger markets as maturity and experience are acquired. Zope can be "right in there", but it may take a degree of coordination and project management that up to this point has rarely been seen outside of DC's internally sponsored efforts. Just my $.02, Jerry S. P.S. As many of you have figured out by now, I am not a native speaker of "code". Studies of personality types have revealed that there are a few individuals (fortunately a small minority) that are permanently stuck in "big picture mode". That seems to be my "problem", and even though I can scrape by and make a living crunching code, I have had to face reality and admit that it will never be "second nature" to me. Instead, the best I can do is to leverage the one thing I'm inclined by nature to pursue, which is at the opposite end of the implementation spectrum. So, don't expect to see crystalline examples of code coming from my direction. At best I can attempt to explain the work of others in a way that more folks can grasp. Prose and analogy describing connections and implications are mostly what I'm up to. Do yourself a favor and skip any posts with this by-line if such are not useful to you. BTW, Thanks for your perseverence in getting this far!

SQL/ZPatterns examples posted to Zope.org

I've had several folks ask for some ZPatterns examples with SQL. I've *finally* gotten around to providing them. They're at: http://www.zope.org/Members/sspickle The first is a school attendance application 'skeleton' with the following description: An example of ZPatterns using SQL. Gadfly is the database so everyone can use it. There are a couple of novel aspects 1) a 'generic' object management UI that is acquired by all the Specialists and 2) levers to manage all the SQL and SkinScript. After you have the products and folder installed, you'll need to create the database tables (run createAllTables_html) and then add some data. There is a very crude admin UI for each Specialist that you can get to from the main 'view' page by clicking on the link for that Specialist. Follow the "object model":attendanceModel.gif to see how to hook things up. If you change any of the ZClass propertysheets you'll need to rerun the levers to create all the SQL queries and SkinScript. (You'll probably also need to drop/re-create the relevant database tables) The second is a school lunch application 'skeleton' which is 99% similar, except that it uses a filesystem base class for the 'Lunch' object, just to show how it can be done. zope core dump

I just tried to restart zope and got a core dump. The backtrace (pasted below) indicated a problem with the binascii module, and sure enough, trying to import it reproduced the segfault. I reinstalled python and it all worked again. This isn't strictly a Zope issue but I wondered if anyone's seen this before, or can explain what might have happened?
