I couldnt resist jumping in. I have been playing w/ ZOPE and BEA Weblogic for over two years. I would say I know more about Weblogic than ZOPE, but I am more productive w/ ZOPE. thus my 'love' for ZOPE. I believe that before ZOPE can truely take off it will need a miniVend like solution to get the PHP/CF/ASPers to ZOPE. Why? Because everyone needs this functionality - Now. In fact, I want it, but not enough to put the time into either of the two existing solutions. When you come to Zope, its almost impossible to build something like this the first day, even if you are somewhat fluent with Python. Why? Tools/Experience from other systems are not out-of-the-box. Sessions _are_ fundamental in keeping state in a shopping cart application. You can not easily embed logic w/ presentation (please dont flame me.) -- all other systems do it. ZOPE is the only one that *forces* you to be correct. people dont want correct, they want it to work, Now. After using resin, http://www.caucho.com/ for over a year, the dynamically loaded classes, form based authentication (i hear this at least 4-5 times a week on #zope), jsp, easy configuration xml file (?environment variable explosion?), sessions, and clear API documentation. I'm not saying make ZOPE - servlet/jsp like I'm just pointing out what I find **incredibly** useful for large scale ecommerce projects, http://www.skyauction.com/ Redhat's solution is a evolved minivend - http://interchange.redhat.com/cgi-bin/ic/index.html I was on #zope for the talk about creating pay modules for ZOPE. I am a fan of this idea. I think having a 100% Zope Certified Product could lead to more consistent configurations/out-of-the-box products -- how many products besides the DC released ones would you give a 100% Zope Certified Product label to? I havent seen that many at all. With some work they could get it, but very few out-of-the-box. The last thing people want is to have to download 3 different products to get another product working. It would be different if these dependancies were on products like PageTemplates in that they are 100% Zope Certified. Seeing that there are over 300 products, its about time the 'truely drop-in products' are seperated from the almost drop-in workable products. I would like to see a Roadmap for ZOPE. A option to purchase 100% Zope Certified Products (I dont believe this was in the survey sent out to the community) that Work Now. I would like to have a clearer way of development path, a Best Practices. ZEO is a huge secret, if you can get the average ASP/PHPer to be able to use ZEO and get interactive debugging working in the a few hours (or out of the box!! ;) -- you will see a new tune sung about 'ease of use'. I think with the right tools coming out of the box w/ ZOPE in the future it will be gain even more popularity. Preserving quality with a 100% Zope Certified label will give people confidance in the testing/reliability of their Products. And with the option of purchasing modules maybe some people can make some(quite a few?) bucks on the side ;). cheers, ~runyaga

LDAPLoginAdapter

I use Zope 2.3.2, python 1.5.2 and python_LDAP 1.1 . I want to use loginadapter 1.5 to authenticate the users who try to connect to the portal I build and during all his session I need to know a lot of things about this user. The loginadapter connects itself to the localhost:390 wich is linked by a secure stunnel to the port 389 of another machine which is a OpenLDAP 2.* server. I use the Loginscreen & cookie option of the configure tab and the RDN of the LDAP database is uid. The authentication is made by uid and work perfectly. My first problem is that : Where I can get the LDAP attributs (such mail or another descriptive field of the LDAP database) after the authentication? AUTHENTICATED_USER contains only the uid (AUTHENTICATED_USER.mail for example is not define, even if I specify it in the loginadapter schema). My second problem is that when I do a research with the search tab of the Loginadapter, it doesn't find anything, as if the database would be empty. On the contrary, the research with the search tab of the LDAPUserManager work perfectly. Management Interface in ZODB

I have a couple of small patches here that allow you to override the manage options (i.e. manage_tabs, manage_page_header, manage_page_footer) in the ZODB. This simple patch seems a nice way to provide this option without breaking compatibility with the current system. It patches the App/Management.py and OFS/Application.py file. This also causes risk of locking yourself out of management, there are 2 ways around this problem; First is to ftp/webDAV in and delete the offending file. I've also added a SUPPRESS_CUST_MANAGE option, (for example abc/SUPPRESS_CUST_MANAGE/manage_main) when this is in the path it will stop use the core zope management interface instead of the custom ones. The problem with this is that i get a "<Override instance at 8189638>" instead of the DTML code that should be in place of the object. As well this option IS NOT thread safe. I'm looking for a better solution but i can't think of one? What do people think of this patch? Is there a better way to do this? Is it possible to get a patch similar to this integrated into the Zope core because it's an extremely useful. Pack tops ZEO Client :-(

Hi, I just tried to pack a 2.4.0b2 Zope server via a ZEO client connected to it. The browser icon just sat there and spun. When I did a top on the server, none of the threads for the ZEO client or the ZSS were anywhere to be seen ;-( Any ideas what happened? cheers, Chris

Content integration question

newbie question I'm have a lot of structured content that I want to batch process into a Zope installation some of it i already have in zclass instances that i want to change to new zclass instances and other stuff is in a variety of access database and Excel spreadsheets, CSV files etc. I have thought about using an external database but i don't think it warrants it for this situation. I also develop Mediasurface applications. there is an integration module that allows you to import CSV or XML marked up content into specified 'Item type', creating a new instance of the type for each record. Item types are a similar concept to Zclasses. what i'm getting at is that i need a similar means in Zope to perform this kind of integration process any guidance would be greatly appreciated

My workspace keeps being redirected to index_html.... Example: http://host/manage_workspace redirects me to http://host/ Likewise, http://host/pi/manage_workspace redirects me to http://host/pi/ I don't understand it, but I see that netscape navigator doesn't seem to have this problem. But Mozilla and Lynx does! DateTime class not recognizing timezone correctly...

Hi -dev folk.. I ha(d) a problem where DateTime was basing the local timezone on time.tzname, and getting it wrong. (tzname comes from the abbreviation, which in Indiana is 'EST', but DateTime really wants 'US/East-Indiana'. So.. I patched DateTime as follows.. I saw a proposal in the archives about this kind of solution. Any other ideas? FYI - http://zwiki.org/ChatMode : "ChatMode is an experimental port of Jim Washington's clever "!ZRTChat product":http://www.zope.org/Members/jwashin/ZRTChat. It stores comments on an ordinary zwiki page. The idea here is that any zwiki page can function as a chat room by viewing it in "chat mode". In this mode the page auto-refreshes and only the most recent comments are shown. View the page normally to see the complete chat log. It ain't no IRC, but come on over and check it out. -Simon
